The bolster is great, washability is great. I'm not sure I would recommend velvet for the cover. It looks lovely until something furry lays in it, then it's like a fur magnet. Major drawback is that the thin little mat does little to cushion from a hard tile floor. My 80lb Greyhound used this bed for nearly a year with the addition of a folded quilt under the included mat, until I made him a new bed from a twin sized memory foam mattress topper, folded it in half. If the pad that came with this bed had been a denser cushion, also with removable cover, I would not have looked for a better option. If your dog is all elbows and knees like a greyhound, you may need more substantial cushioning underneath.
